New communication protocols

The Telematics group has been one of the main contributers to the NSIS group of IETF over the recent years. The Internet Engineering Task Force is responsible for the world wide technological advancement of the internet. Within IETF, the NSIS (Next Steps In Signaling) Working Group is responsible for standardizing an IP signaling protocol to support signaling for different services or resources, such as NAT and firewall traversal and Quality of Service. These will be the main components necessary to develop the internet from a pure ?best effort? network towards a reliable and secure medium that can be used to commercially offer serious services with defined and differentiable qualities. Examples are telephony, television and other media transmission.

The contributions of the Telematics group are mainly in the area of protocol architecture, performance and security studies and related mobility issues. One Internet RFC (Request for Comment) and several Internet Drafts have been co-authored by members of the Telematics group and numerous publications have been placed in highly reputed scientific journals and conferences.

In addition, mobility support will become essential to achieve the all-IP infrastructure and to connect all devices to the Internet at all time and any place. In this aspect the Telematics Group is actively involved in the design, further development and evaluation of emerging mobility protocols and solutions.
